The key to maintaining.

The key to maintaining.

The harder part of weight loss for many is actually maintenance, not the weight loss phase. So many patients are outstanding at losing weight, but they definitely hit hard times with the maintenance phase. I have discovered the key to weight loss is the diet. The key to maintenance is exercise. I have discovered that most patients eat approximately 100-200 calories a day above their metabolic rate when they conclude a weight loss program. It is probably due to their metabolic rate dropping during that time due to the diet. How one can make up those calories is simple, simply move in an exercise program 100-200 calories per day. It could be a bike, elliptical trainer or dancing, and daily activities such as cleaning your house. Patients that do not exercise tend to gain 1-2 pounds a month. In fact, I have discovered that if someone hurts themselves such as twist their ankle or breaks their leg and decreases their activity level that will tend to cause that weight gain. Most people will not diet the rest of their lives and be able to cut that 100-200 calories indefinitely, that is why exercise is so critical. One other technique I use in the weight loss phase to maintain is testosterone cream as that will help maintain and/or build muscle mass, which would directly increase metabolic rate. One other technique is to add green tea every morning either in pill form or in liquid form. Green tea can raise your metabolic rate up to 5% daily, which is up to 100 calories per day.

The other big key to maintaining is to pull the trigger early. Do not wait till you gain 30 or 40 pounds. The key is to pull the trigger at 4-8 pounds, which is one size. I have my patients get rid of all their larger clothes so if they gain one size they would be naked as I make them promise me that they are not to gain, they are not to buy any new outfits at bigger sizes. That usually will prompt them to pull the trigger then. I also have my patients check in every 2 weeks after the program and I actually pay them $5 credit each time they do as an encouragement for accountability. So exercise, accountability, green tea all are modalities utilized in the maintenance program.
